Organizing Books
As we move back into the house, one of the more
daunting chores is organizing all of the stuff that we packed up when we moved
out. The house is arranged differently now, and we're trying to limit the
number of pieces of furniture in order to maintain a sense of openness in the
house. For me, books are the biggest problem. I'm attempting to sort the books
by some sort of categorization scheme in the shelving unit I'm using for
Orthodox books. I decided I would have a shelf for praxis and liturgics, one
for history, and one for theology.
It
was the last category that has caused me the most problems. Actually, all of
the categories cause me problems. You see, as one of the Desert Fathers said,
"A theologian is one who prays, and one who prays is truly a theologian." That
is, true knowledge of God comes only through interacting with Him, and that, of
course, means prayer. So, do my prayer books go with my theology books? Do my
books on the lives of various Saints go with history, or praxis, or theology? I
think this will actually all help me, as now I have a ready made excuse for not
organizing my books. I haven't really done so for the past thirty some-odd
years - I suppose there is little reason to start now.
