We flew direct from San Diego to Lihue airport, on the eastern side of Kauai. The flight was slightly under 6 hours, and we arrived in the middle of the afternoon. The airport, like a number of buildings on Kauai is designed to be open air in a lot of locations. This allows one to enjoy the fresh tropical air.
We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on Wailua Bay, which is just a few miles from the airport. We opted to stay in one of their cottages. It has a single bedroom and then a living room with a pullout sofa (we added a rollaway as well). It was a little cramped having two wheelchairs in the space and a total of four adults, but it largely worked out well. With the cottages you miss out on the ocean view, but the space was more important. When we go back, they do have rooms for two people that have a roll in shower that appear to have ocean views available.
The other nice thing with the cottages is that you get a nice green space behind them. With the green space, does come a rather large supply of chickens, but they are fun to have around (the locals would disagree).
The first night we ate at the Hotel Bar/Restaurant known as Mama Hunes. The Hotel gives you several free Mai Tai tickets to use during your stay, and the food is very tasty. I started the week with a Portugese Sausage.
We ended up at Mama Hune’s frequently. Good food, drink, and a really pleasant staff.
